Imtiaz Ali: “Deepika takes risks and can be gracious!”
&picturesHD – India’s premium mass Hindi movie channel keeping its promise of #HDfirst will premiere ‘Tamasha’ on Saturday, 30th April at 8 PM. Directed by the luminous Imtiaz Ali, the Deepika Padukone & Ranbir Kapoor starrer is a movie about the journey of someone who has lost his edge trying to behave according to socially acceptable conventions.
It is based on the central theme of abrasion and loss of self that happens as one attempts to fit in society. On the occasion of the World HD Premiere of ‘Tamasha’ on &picturesHD, Imtiaz Ali spoke about the theme, characterization and the selection of exotic locations in his movies.
What is the core thought of ‘Tamasha’?
I would always see outside the window of the train and imagine myself that there is somebody over there who I would have been had I not experienced living in a society. You get the feeling that I’m somebody else, I’m not this guy, this director or whatever it is that people think. I often feel people start playing roles of what they’re expected to be.
The thought behind the movie comes from the fact that some people are not used to their full potential if they do not find the path that they are suited for. One such character is Ved in the movie, who is in a world which is not suited to him. It hurts and can be very degrading to a human being to be doing something that he is not good at while there is something in him which can be utilized better.
Why did you select Corsica as a backdrop?
I just wanted a place which was not frequented by Indians and was contemplating between Corsica and Ecuador.
Can you tell us something more about Ranbir Kapoor’s character Ved and his many layers?
The unique thing about Ranbir is that he is very sensitive. He can take on various personalities and as an actor, he is very real and pure. I can think of different people with this one actor. In the movie, Ved Vardhan Sahani (played by Ranbir Kapoor) and since childhood, he loves performances on stage and is influenced by stories and fairy tales. Ranbir has a connection with Ved.

When I saw her for the first time, I thought that this is a girl with immense potential. I was always waiting to work with her. As an actor, she is no longer unconfident. She can come forward, take risks as well as can be gracious. It was very exciting to work with her.
