ZEE Keralam launches Kanmashi, its new fiction offering that brings together family relationships, romance through the journey of a young woman challenging society’s conventional perceptions of beauty.
Set against Kerala’s cultural and emotional landscape, Kanmashi places Rohini at the centre of a story about identity, dignity and the courage to look beyond judgments defined by appearance.
The title draws from Kanmashi, the familiar Malayalam word for Kajal. Traditionally used to highlight the eyes, the word assumes a deeper significance in the narrative, becoming a metaphor for everything that appearances cannot reveal: emotion, character, love and the truths that often remain unspoken.
Rohini (played by Devika Jijeesh) grows up confronted by prejudice and judgment over her complexion. But beneath society’s perception is a woman of resilience and quiet courage. Kanmashi follows her journey as she gradually refuses to allow external perceptions to determine either her identity or her worth. Her strongest emotional anchor is her father, Krishnan (Sreejith Kaiveli), whose sacrifices have shaped her life. Against the backdrop of fractured family relationships and unresolved wounds, their bond becomes one of the emotional foundations of the story. Rohini’s world changes when Venu (played by Yuva Krishna), a compassionate bank manager carrying unresolved chapters from his own past, enters her life. What begins as an unlikely relationship gradually brings Rohini closer to a world of buried truths and unanswered questions. As their lives become intertwined, Kanmashi moves beyond romance into a larger story of family secrets, mystery and an unexpected supernatural connection.
At its heart, Kanmashi examines an idea that continues to influence conversations around beauty and self-worth: Can an individual’s value ever be determined by appearance?
Through Rohini’s journey, the narrative challenges colour-based prejudice and explores beauty through character, courage, compassion and self-belief rather than complexion.
At ZEE Keralam, we believe powerful fiction begins with characters and emotions that audiences recognise from the world around them. Kanmashi takes a familiar conversation around beauty and appearance and approaches it through the journey of a woman discovering the strength to define herself on her own terms. The combination of strong family emotions, romance layer makes Kanmashi a distinctive addition to our fiction universe.
The narrative of Kanmashi is penned by acclaimed writer Pradeep Paniker, known for crafting emotionally engaging stories rooted in strong characters and family relationships. Through Kanmashi, he brings together themes of identity, love, family dynamics and social perceptions, weaving them into Rohini’s journey while adding layers of emotion and intrigue to the narrative.
Rather than treating social commentary as a standalone message, Kanmashi embeds it within an emotionally charged family narrative where relationships carry unresolved histories and appearances frequently conceal deeper truths.
With its mix of emotion, romance, family conflict and mystery, Kanmashi strengthens ZEE Keralam’s fiction offering with a new story that asks audiences to look beyond what is immediately visible.
Kanmashi: Beyond what the eyes can see.
