India’s biggest theatre for Hindi Movies, Zee Cinema honoring the fourteen glorious years of Lagaan will exclusively screen the film on Saturday, 20th June at 8 PM.
The film is the only third Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Award for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ after Mother India and Salaam Bombay was listed in Time magazine’s All-TIME 25 Best Sports Movies in the world. Charged with a mammoth cast and production crew, Lagaan was made with an unprecedented budget of those times of Rs 25 crores. Touted as a cinematic masterpiece, the film stars Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh as leads.
Written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan is a set in the village of Champaner in 1893, torn apart by drought and burdened with the despicable lagaan- a tax levied by the Britishers as governing rule. When the region’s commander, Capt. Andrew Russell (Paul Blackthorne), forces the local Raja (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) to double the tax, angry villagers object the rule directly to Russell who, on a nasty whim, agrees to cancel their lagaan for three years if they can beat his team at cricket with one sinister condition- if they lose, they have to pay triple lagaan!
A local young lad Bhuvan (Amir Khan), despite his lack of knowledge about the game convinces his fellow villagers to seize the opportunity as a point of national pride. Aided by Captain Rusell’s sister, Elizabeth (Rachel Shelley), will Bhuvan and his teammates defeat the British at their own game?
Tune in this Saturday, 20th June at 8 PM to catch the courageous on-field battle between Bhuvan XI and Captain Rusell’s team, only on Zee Cinema
