Of all the Bollywood themes that have captivated audiences for decades, ‘dosti’ has been primal. Numerous films have harped on the bond of friendship churning out performances and stories that have traversed through generation of audiences.
Amitabh Bachchan starrer Yaarana is one such cult. Featuring one of greatest musical blockbusters rendered by Kishore Kumar in “Tere Jaisa Yaar Kaha’, the film laid out a heart-wrenching story of friendship that tides over all odds and of dreams turning into reality.
Often pitted against each other, Yaarana features Amitabh Bachchan and Amjad Khan as childhood buddies. While Kishana is an orphan, Bishan belongs to an affluent family but what binds them is an inseparable bond. As an ode to his friendship, Bishan puts his all at stake to turn Kishan into a singing sensation. But things soon start spiralling downwards for Bishan who gets entrapped by his uncle and cousin and sent off to a mental asylum. Kishan, now a rising star, takes it on himself to repay the debt and free his best friend from the culprits. Replete with hard core action, superlative performances and soul stirring music, the film promises a rewarding watch.
40 years since its release, Kishan and Bishan’s friendship still remains a heart-warming union. Yaarana also gave us evergreen songs like ‘Chukar Mere Dil Ko’ and ‘Sara Zamana’ which will tug at your heartstrings even today. And if not for anything else, Yaarana deserves a watch for Amitabh Bachchan performance in the black leather suit embellished with lights, that is forever etched in our hearts.
