IMDb Portrait Studio at Jio MAMI Mumbai Festival 2023: Mira Nair shares the name of that one movie that she always wished to direct in ‘Burning Questions’

IMDb is hosting its first-ever exclusive portrait and video studio in India at the Jio 2023 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, expanding its on-the-ground presence at leading festivals worldwide. The studio aims to give fans a virtual front-row seat to all the latest news, titles and stars at MAMI.

During her interview with IMDb for their exclusive segment ‘Burning Questions’ at the IMDb Portrait Studio, Mira Nair shared some anecdotes about what she has learned about herself this year which surprised her and a performance that recently blew her mind.

She said, “I saw the film by Michael Mann called “Ferrari”. The extraordinary performance by Penelope Cruz blew my mind in its nuance and in its passion and in the ability to transcend borders with her work”.

Mira Nair shared what she has learnt this year about herself which surprised her, and said, “I have learnt that creative energy is not limitless, you have to be ruthless about your creative energy, conserve your energy and make your art matter.”

About her upcoming projects, Mira said, “My next project is the “Monsoon Wedding” stage musical which we are bringing to India based on my film, of course. I have 2 films that I’m making in the next two years, one is Amri, which is about Amrita Shergil, and the second movie is called “Bro”.

On her inspiration at this stage of her career, Mira mentioned, “It is the resistance and the ability to speak out, the ability to speak the truth, to power and our chance to speak out about the terrible world in movies, cinema, theatre and art.

Mentioning the movie she always wanted to direct, Mira said, “The film I wished to direct would be a film by Gillo Pontecoryo called “The Battle of Algiers”.

Speaking about her favourite Indian title of 2023, Mira mentioned, “It would be Kohrra’, the series I saw on Netflix which I thought was a remarkable unfolding of a city in today’s India,

Regarding who she would want to grab a drink with, Mira mentioned, “A person from the world of movies would be Guru Dutt that I would love to know and surely we could have had several drinks together.”
