Rest of World launches Long Reads – A new audio series bringing our global tech stories to life

The series will be available on restofworld.org, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts

This week, Rest of World is launching Long Reads, a new audio series that transforms our rigorously reported long-form features into engaging narrated stories. Available on restofworld.org and major podcast platforms such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts, Long Reads aims to broaden the horizon of our audience by making in-depth tech narratives more accessible and enjoyable.

New episodes of Long Reads will be released every other Thursday, following publication of our feature articles every other Tuesday. Over the years we’ve heard from many of you wishing we had audio versions of our stories, and now you can enjoy our award-winning journalism in your down-time, on your commute, while making dinner, doing laundry… hey, live your life!

At Rest of World, we believe in the power of human narration to enhance the storytelling experience. We considered using automated text-to-speech solutions, but decided to go with a more personal approach to maintain the nuance and depth of our features, which are deeply rooted in the local contexts and cultures of the places we cover.

Each episode of Long Reads is narrated by the voices of Rest of World’s own staff, bringing a personal touch to technology stories that span the globe. With post-production handled by the team at Posta.fm in Buenos Aires, Argentina, our narrators go to great lengths—recording in closets, under duvets, and even beneath jackets in co-working spaces—to deliver a high quality and immersive audio experience.

Long Reads is our first experiment in audio publishing, and part of our commitment to innovation and inclusivity in journalism. Over the next few months, we will be closely monitoring the series’ performance and feedback from our global community, as we explore new opportunities to support and expand our audio content.

We invite you to join us on this exciting new (audio) journey. Listen to Long Reads on our audio page, directly within our features, or by subscribing on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
